EPR Club / DSD Lunch debate - 22 April 2015

Design for Recycling:
Greening products to close the loop

22 April 2015 | 12.30 - 14.30

Transition to a circular economy requires changes throughout the value chain. Designing products that are easier to maintain, repair, upgrade, remanufacture or recycle - Eco-design - is key to achieving the overall aim of the circular economy: keep the added value in products for as long as possible and turn waste into a valuable resource.

The Juncker Commission has spoken up for a more coherent EU framework for promoting the circular economy, including not only waste policy but also product policy related elements. EPR has proven to be an effective policy tool to push eco-design: When producers are responsible to pay for managing product waste at the end of life, they have a strong (financial) incentive to design products that are less over-packed, last longer or can be re-used and recycled.

In order to establish and provide the right political framework, there is a need for cooperation of all relevant actors along the value chain. The lunch debate aims to stimulate a constructive stakeholder dialogue on steering effects of EPR and product design requirements for achieving a circular economy.
