Baltic authorities step up support for online sellers on EPR compliance

National authorities in the Baltic region have launched a joint information effort to help online retailers understand and comply with their Extended Producer Responsibility obligations. As part of this initiative they have released a new website designed to address widespread uncertainty among sellers that offer goods to consumers within the European Union.

The website, created jointly by EPR authorities in the Nordic and Baltic countries, explains the rules that apply to a wide range of products. These include packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, single use plastic products, fishing gear containing plastic, vehicles and beverage containers. Additional product groups apply in individual countries. Estonia requires compliance for agricultural plastics and Finland includes paper and paper products. Future legislation at European Union level is expected to add textiles, shoes, pharmaceutical products and cosmetics.

Authorities in the region are strengthening cooperation in order to improve enforcement. Companies that fail to comply after being clearly informed of their obligations may face consequences.

The new website offers practical guidance for businesses on how to meet their responsibilities and ensure that their products are placed on the market lawfully. It serves as a practical resource for sellers that operate within or ship goods to the European Union. If you wish to learn more, click here
