New ACR+ report “Single-Use Plastics Directive and Extended Producer Responsibility for litter management”

Plastic pollution continues to pose a major challenge for communities across Europe, and the question of who should finance the management of litter has become increasingly important. The new report “Single-Use Plastics Directive and Extended Producer Responsibility for litter management”, released as the first ACR+ policy paper on litter, examines how European Union Member States are putting Article 8 of the Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) into practice.

The paper compiles available data on litter management costs, providing clearer insight into a complex and under-studied policy area. By comparing national systems and identifying gaps in implementation, the report shows that the financial burden of litter still falls largely on public authorities and highlights the need for greater transparency in how these costs are calculated.

While the full report “Single-Use Plastics Directive and Extended Producer Responsibility for litter management” is available exclusively to ACR+ members, the executive summary is publicly accessible and offers valuable insights for those seeking to understand the evolving landscape of litter management in Europe.
