PackUK, the scheme administrator for the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging programme, has published RAM 2027, the latest version of its Recyclability Assessment Methodology, which producers will use to assess the recyclability of household packaging placed on the market from 2027.
The methodology determines whether packaging is classified as green, amber or red, with the ratings influencing modulated producer fees under the EPR scheme. Developed following extensive consultation with producers, trade associations and technical experts, RAM 2027 introduces clearer material specific rules, updated definitions and improved assessment guidance to reduce ambiguity and better reflect real world recycling performance.
The UK Government states the revised methodology is intended to support more consistent assessments, encourage packaging design that improves recyclability and strengthen alignment between fee modulation and actual recycling outcomes.
